1 July – It’s a second opportunity to see Jonathan Wilson at The Brudenell Social Club as they play a ‘one-off’ UK show on their way to a raft of European festival dates.
Again they mainly play tracks from their first album Gentle Spirit, mixed with some songs from their next Fanfare, which is out in October.
There’s a fine line that some bands cross where they can become self indulgent. Jonathan and his excellent band get very close to that line tonight but manage to just remain on the right side. They close with my favourite, Desert Raven, so I’d have forgiven them anyway.
All being well they’ll be back when the new album is released and I’ll be here to see them!
8 July – I don’t know Tift Merritt‘s songs at all, although I know the name and have probably unknowingly heard her on the radio but, as Laura and Brian know, I’m always willing to give stuff a chance. When Laura tells me they’re going to see Tift at the Brudenell I’m in!
My question is this: why haven’t I been listening to this woman for years? Great songs, including a cover of Tom Waits’ Train Song, played with a fine three piece band. One thing that puzzled me was this: the guitarist played electric, acoustic and pedal steel but whenever he sat to play the pedal steel he put his glasses on, removing them when he stood back up. Strange!
I hope she’s back soon.
